About
Ron Smith, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Music and Music Education, has served at Piedmont International University since August, 2006. Prior to serving at PIU he was Professor of Music from 1980-2006 and Chair of the Music Department from 1993-2006 at Pensacola Christian College. Dr. Smith also was the Band Director at Huntington Christian Academy in West Virginia from 1978-1980.

He is most thankful for the trombone teachers he has had over the years who not only taught trombone but to live an honest life. These men include Larry B. Campbell (Louisiana State University), Allen Ostrander (New York Philharmonic), Lewis Van Haney (Indiana University), Charles Dalkert (Ithaca College),and John H. Mead (Marshall University) As a brass teacher Dr. Smith has many students serving as Christian school band directors, college professors, and performers in Military Bands throughout the United States. He also maintains a trombone studio teaching Piedmont area high school trombonists of which some have achieved membership in North Carolina All State bands and Jazz Bands.

Dr. Smith enjoys playing golf (he has two holes in one), reading biographies of presidents, composers, and the Civil War Generals. One of his favorite Bible verses is Luke 9:23, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

Dr. Smith is married to Alice since 1979 and they have three sons, Ryan/Amy, Jason/Jill, and Jeremy/Kylee. In addition there are four grandchildren with a fifth on the way!
