Coach Josh Howard

The BREAKING NEWS story on July 27, 2016 that Josh Howard was coming to PIU as head coach generated over 160,000 views on FaceBook, numerous TV, radio and newspaper articles. Piedmont is pleased to be able to say our head basketball coach is Josh Howard!

Coach Howard, a decorated graduate of Wake Forest (2003), was one of only three basketball players in the history of the ACC unanimously selected as ACC Player of the Year. He was named the national player of the year by FOX, College Insider and Basketball Digest and was a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award and the James Naismith Award. Howard was drafted in the first round of the 2003 NBA draft and was selected as an NBA all-star in 2007. Recently he was named an ACC Legend for his basketball accomplishments

Upon accepting this position, Coach Howard said, “I am excited to be a part of Piedmont, investing in lives that will make a difference. I look forward to the season, building the athletic program at Piedmont  and having the student body of Piedmont partner with me and the Josh Howard foundation (joshhowardfoundation.com) as we invest together in the community. We hope to include community projects, basketball camps, after school tutoring, Bible clubs and working with the church.”

There are four key areas that demonstrate Coach Howard’s commitment to Piedmont and the program.

  • Spiritual Life: He desires all players to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, know that they have eternal life, and mature in their faith.

  • Academics: He desires all players to excel in academics demonstrated by his requirement for athletes to sit in the front row of class, give undivided attention to the professor and attend designated study periods for learning help. Players must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA to play on his team.

  • Athletics: He desires all players to perform at their highest athletic potential producing a winning program.

  • Social Life: He desires all players to become well-rounded men, demonstrating character, integrity and fit in well as leaders in the student body.

Coach Howard invites you to come out and support the team!
