Mr. Hayes was born and raised in the city of Chicago.  He was privileged to have a Christian grandmother and mother who took him to a solid Bible-believing church where he was saved at a young age.  After high school Mr. Hayes attended Northern Illinois University for a year before joining the US Air Force.  During his time in the military he spent three out of four years overseas in Central America and Southeast Asia.  While stationed in Thailand he had the opportunity to work with missionaries, and God gave him a love and burden for the Thai people.  Upon returning to the States he briefly attended Florida Bible College where he met and married his wife Kathi. Mr. Hayes earned his BA in Bible from Bob Jones University in 1977.  In 1978 he and his wife joined Baptist World Mission, and in 1979 they arrived in Thailand to serve the Lord as church planters.  They spent the next 32 years planting churches in Thailand and Cambodia where he also started Baptists for Cambodia.  During his time as a missionary Mr. Hayes continued his education earning an MRE from GrandRapids Baptist Seminary, as well as completing all but his dissertation for a PhD in Intercultural Studies from Biola University.  Mr. Hayes and his wife returned to the States in December 2011 and joined the faculty at Piedmont International University in January 2012.
