Having taught in both Christian and secular schools in most grades (K3 – 8th), Mrs. Cheryl Howard has a broad understanding of curriculum and teaching strategies.  She believes that teachers need to love all their students and strives to demonstrate this to her students by getting to know them beyond academics. She enjoys spending time outdoors hiking and gardening.  Her favorite hobby is reading historical fiction and First Ladies biographies. She is married to Mr. Terry Howard and resides in Ararat, North Carolina. They have three grown children and five grandchildren.

She was born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC, and accepted the Lord as her Savior in a youth revival at the age of fourteen. She has taught in both Christian and public schools and has recently retired from The North Carolina Public School System after teaching for 20 years at Shoals Elementary in Surry County. She has taught at PIU for 8 years.

Teacher of the Year at Shoals Elementary School in 1989
Received the Alumni Achievement Award for Public School Educator of the year by the PIU Alumni Association in 1993.
